If you’ve ever taken a stroll along the upper or lower Zavitan stream, you might be surprised to learn that it possesses a middle segment: the middle Zavitan, more commonly known as the Black Canyon due to the presence of its distinctive black waterfalls. Embarking on a journey to this captivating gorge involves abseiling within the falls and a short walk between them. However, it’s important to note that visiting this unique destination is only permitted in the company of a certified abseiling guide.
Unveiling the Wonders of the Black Canyon
To ensure your entry to the reserve, it’s highly advisable to secure a reservation in advance through the Nature and Parks Authority website. Alternatively, entry can be granted based on availability. It’s worth considering that weekends and holidays tend to witness a surge in visitor numbers, leading to higher demand.
Please be aware that prior to accessing the Yehudia Reserve camping area, individuals intending to explore the Black Canyon are required to register for two primary reasons. Firstly, this measure ensures that every visitor is accompanied by a certified abseiling guide, enhancing safety. Secondly, the Nature and Parks Authority has instituted a daily cap on the number of hikers allowed within the canyon. This limitation serves the dual purpose of preventing overcrowding and minimizing disruption to the local ecosystem.
At key points within the canyon—specifically, at the first waterfall in Nahal Zavitan, the black gorge, and the cascade waterfall—an SOS WIFI system has been established. This system facilitates cellular reception in case of emergencies during your expedition. When you spot a small red sign bearing the label “SOS WIFI,” you’ll be able to connect to the corresponding wireless network and call for assistance if needed.
Setting Out on Your Adventure
The journey commences at the Harbat al-Sheikh Hussein campsite, situated a short distance to the east of the visitor center within the Yehudia reserve. From this starting point, you’ll follow the trail marked with a blue indicator. As you traverse this path, you’ll traverse the basalt plains of the Golan Heights, eventually reaching the stunning vantage point overlooking the Zavitan waterfall. Along the way, you’ll also pass through a cattle passing. Upon arriving at the Zavitan waterfall lookout, a descent begins – involving two ladders, each marked in blue. This descent grants access to the pools at the base of the impressive waterfall. At the conclusion of this descent, you’ll veer left onto an unmarked trail. It’s imperative to note that this marks the entry point into the Black Canyon route itself. Therefore, walking this path is permissible solely for registered hikers under the guidance of a qualified professional.
The Black Canyon Adventure Unfolded
From the instant you enter the route, the trail meanders between towering cliff walls, nestled within a lush thicket of remarkable aquatic vegetation such as figs and vines. In a brief span, you’ll encounter the first pool. While entry isn’t mandatory, be prepared to get wet sooner rather than later.
Continuing onward, you’ll reach the initial waterfall of the excursion—a majestic 6-meter descent. After abseiling down into the pool below, you’ll progress to a second pool before undertaking an even more exhilarating 20-meter waterfall abseil.
The path advances alongside the stream, leading you to the “Hidden Waterfall.” Descending this waterfall requires the assistance of pegs. On cooler days, you might choose to proceed around 100 meters further to bask on sun-warmed rocks.
The remainder of the journey runs parallel to the stream. As the culmination approaches, you’ll encounter a deep pool. From this point, you’ll engage in the final waterfall descent for this expedition—an impressive cascading waterfall standing around 20 meters tall. A sizable 50-meter-long water pool awaits at the base of this waterfall, bordered by large boulders that offer a moment of respite before commencing the return trip.
Leaving the pool signifies the end of the demanding phase of the adventure. From here, the trail continues alongside the stream for approximately 300 meters, leading to the intersection with the black trail markings. These markings guide you up an extended staircase, leading you back to the plains of the Golan Heights. Upon reaching the intersection of paths marked in red, you’ll follow this path toward the Yehudia campsite. Subsequently, upon encountering the path with green markings, you’ll continue along it until you reach the campsite.
A Glimpse of Nature’s Bounty
The trail introduces you to a wealth of verdant vegetation—annual shrubs adorning cliff walls and slopes, as well as abundant aquatic plants along the stream banks. The local fauna is equally captivating. Occasional encounters with rock rabbits, various amphibious creatures, crabs, and the distinctive sounds of bats (audible as you approach the “Black Gorge” waterfall) can enliven your journey.
Getting There
To partake in the Black Canyon adventure, coordination is essential via the Nature and Parks Authority website. Upon your arrival at the trailhead, registration is obligatory at the information station, with the provision of an ID card.
Remember, embarking on this trail is only permitted when accompanied by a certified abseiling guide.
Due to the logistical challenges of waste disposal along the trail, please carry a garbage bag to assist in collecting debris that accumulates along the water’s flow. This collective effort is essential for the preservation of the reserve and the enjoyment of future adventurers.
