Between Aloni HaBashan and Ein Zivan is Ein Mokesh, which is one of the most beautiful springs in the Golan Heights and the north of Israel. This is a place that was relatively unknown until a few years ago, and today has become quite popular (and rightly so), especially among residents of the area.
Like other springs (for example, Ein Jones), this is also an ancient well that was excavated at the site about 150 years ago, by the local Circassians. In 2011, as part of the landmine clearance process in the Golan Heights, the road leading to the spring was cleared, which made it accessible for bathing and gave it its name – “Ein Mokesh” (Mokesh in Hebrew means Landmine).
But the greatest magic of all is the process of discovering the place: to reach the spring one has to walk a wide path, next to a fenced minefield and the remains of an abandoned Circassian village. When you arrive, at first you notice the strange circle of stones that surrounds the pool, and only when you reach the edge of the pit do you notice the clear water inside.
From here, you have two ways to proceed: you can go down into the water gently on the spiral stone steps that have been built on the spot, or you can jump straight into the water. Why do we recommend jumping? Because, unlike other springs, in Ein Mokesh the pool is huge – with a depth of 8 meters and a diameter of 10 meters – which allows jumping in it head first without fear!
Keep in mind that the place is not shaded, so dress accordingly (especially on hot days). It is advisable to bring a mat, some food and drink, and a coffee set and enjoy the atmosphere by the pool.
Ein Mokeshon
Once you have dived into the water at Ein Mokesh, do not give up on his cute little brother: “Ein Mokeshon”. This is another pool, smaller but no less clear and beautiful than the first, which is a short distance away (continue with the path and bypass the army Anti-Aircraft unit there, and you will see it).
Inside the pool, you will find fish and sea turtles swimming. The pool is smaller, and the stairs to it are broken, so it will be (probably) more comfortable for you to jump.
Getting to Ein Mokesh
Take Route 91 in the direction of the Customs House junction (Bet HaMeches) to the Ein Zivan junction, and turn right onto Road 98. After a little over a kilometer, a sign pointing to “Ein Mokesh” can be seen. At this point, park the car and walk a few minutes on the path (about 300 meters) until you reach the spring. Please note: Do not cross the fence with the warning signs alerting of the presence of a nearby minefield.
In Waze: “Ein Mokesh”
