Gideon Spring in the Jezreel Valley3 min read

The scenic village of Gideon, nestled in the heart of the Jezreel Valley between Afula and Nazareth, is home to the enchanting Gideon Spring. Named after the biblical figure Gideon ben Yoash, this natural oasis offers visitors a serene escape into nature’s wonders. In this guide, we’ll take you through the journey to reach this hidden gem and provide essential details to make your visit memorable.

Getting To Gideon Spring

To reach Gideon Spring, we recommend driving on Road 60 from Afula to Nazareth. If you’re coming from the Megiddo junction, continue on Road 65 until its end, and then turn left onto Road 60.

Upon entering the village, you’ll find it stretching on both sides of the road, between Balfuria and Mizra. For those coming from Afula, take a right and pass under the road; if arriving from Nazareth, turn left.

At the village’s entrance, marked by the old synagogue and the school, reset your car’s odometer. Follow the main street for approximately 300 meters until it transforms into a dirt path flanked by fields and an orchard to your right, and a field to your left. During winter, beware of muddy conditions that may render the path impassable for vehicles. After about a kilometer, you’ll pass over a water canal. Make a left turn after crossing the canal and drive along its side, adorned with common reeds, until you reach the building opposite.

The spring lies to the right of the building, eagerly waiting to welcome visitors.

Exploring Gideon

Kfar Gideon is a settlement with a rich history, named in honor of the valiant judge Gideon ben Yoash, who fought against the Medes in this very region. The village has experienced various transformations over the years, transitioning from a religious moshav to a more ultra-Orthodox community.

As you enter the village, you’ll notice an abandoned synagogue and matzot bakery on the left. While they stand as testaments to the village’s history, they are off-limits due to safety concerns.

The Gideon Spring was lovingly renovated by the friends of Eliyahu Ashari, in memory of the tragic event when he was kidnapped and murdered in June 2006 near Ramallah.

The Spring’s Beauty

The Gideon Spring emerges from a peaceful pool, boasting a size of approximately five meters and a depth of about eight meters. The water is fresh but carries a subtle saltiness, adding to its allure.

Within the building, you’ll find a shallow pool, although the waters are usually a bit muddy.

Noteworthy Structure: Behind the Shubach structure, designed for biological control, you’ll witness a fascinating method of respiration. This process multiplies respiration that prey on gnats harmful to agriculture, striking a harmonious balance in the ecosystem.
