HaTikva Market in Tel Aviv

HaTikva Market is not a fancy or fashionable market, but it is one of the most pleasant, tidy, and spacious markets in the country. The market, founded in the 1930s, is located in the HaTikva neighborhood in south Tel Aviv and is named after it. The small but spacious market is located in the north of the neighborhood, mostly on HaTikva Street and in the alleys that exit from it to the Etzel and Lehi streets.

Unlike other more upscale markets in Tel Aviv, you will not find here any imported gourmet delicacies or discover exotic vegetables that you have not heard of before, with no pompous luxury restaurants or famous chef’s places – but you can fill the fridge and pantry with plenty of fresh products.

The market has many stalls and shops, including stalls for fresh vegetables and fruits, butchers, bakeries, and delicacies. There are also grocery stores, spices, organic food, sweets, flowers, housewares, kitchen utensils, tools, and clothing, as well as falafel stalls and popular restaurants. The market is also famous for its many shops associated with certain ethnicities, such as shops selling Iraqi cookies or Yemeni food. If you are hungry the problem will be solved relatively cheaply in the many popular restaurants that are still here, most are very old and run by the second or third generation of founders.

In 2005 the place was renovated and today it is shaded, relatively clean, aesthetic, bright, airy, with wide and comfortable passages, and yet it has managed to maintain its authenticity as well. It is recommended to embark on a culinary journey between the stalls, eateries, and recommended restaurants of the market. Come hungry, with a basket.

Recommended Places in HaTikva Market

The Saluf

A glorious Yemeni institution founded more than 20 years ago. This is a Yemeni bakery that is also a happy Hamara, preparing a wide variety of traditional pastries whose recipes have been passed down in the family from generation to generation. Here they offer excellent Kaunas, bread with an omelet, malawah with egg, Saluf, Jahnun, and Harira soup. You can take some of the pastries home or eat leisurely on the long tables in the bakery itself. The food can be washed down with fresh beer from the barrel, almond arak, or ouzo. It is recommended to come here on a Friday in the late morning when the place becomes a bustling Hamara with public singing, dancing, and lots of arak and ouzo alongside the Yemenite dough.
