Netiv Haasara: Tranquil Beauty and Resilience3 min read

Nestled in the northwest of the Negev, Netiv Haasara stands as a testament to both tranquility and resilience. This village, part of the Ashkelon Coast Regional Council, has a rich history that intertwines with the enduring spirit of its people. Join us as we embark on a journey through the captivating landscapes, historical milestones, and the unwavering community that defines Netiv Haasara.

History and Origin:

Founded in 1973, the roots of Netiv Haasara trace back to the Yamit settlement. Originally established in Yamit (in the Sinay peninsula), the moshav faced destruction during Israel’s evacuation of this territory, leading to its relocation to the current site in 1982. Seventy pioneering families from Yamit resettled on the hill overlooking the sea, each receiving an agricultural farm, marking the birth of Netiv Haasara.

In the 1990s, the village expanded, preparing land for additional farms to accommodate the “continuing sons.” Today, while agriculture remains a vital part of the community, Netiv Haasara has evolved into a dynamic blend of traditional and modern lifestyles.

Settlement Expansion:

Determined to grow, Netiv Haasara embarked on a journey of expansion. The landscape surrounding the village transformed, including the creation of a security path, a perimeter road, and a forest between the settlement and the border with Gaza. The result was the offering of 71 lots for sale, fostering a new neighborhood envisioned by the founders’ sons.

Despite these positive developments, challenges arose in 2019 when plans were announced to use the surrounding sands for mining purposes. Residents opposed the plan, highlighting concerns about the impact on agricultural land and the unique ecosystem of the area, home to endangered vertebrate species.

Origin of the Name:

The village’s poignant name, Netiv Haasara, Hebrew for “Lane of Ten”, stems from a tragic event in 1971. A helicopter disaster claimed the lives of ten aircrew members and soldiers, an incident forever memorialized in the village’s nomenclature.

Facing Challenges:

Netiv Haasara has faced its share of challenges, especially following the withdrawal of the IDF from the Gaza Strip in 2005. Positioned as the closest settlement to the new border, the village became a target for rocket attacks and other security threats. Tragically, lives were lost, and the community faced hardships during various military operations.

Resilience and Tragedy:

The strength and resilience of Netiv Haasara were put to the ultimate test on Simchat Torah, October 7, 2023. Terrorists infiltrated the village from the Gaza Strip, launching a surprise attack that resulted in the tragic loss of 21 lives and the kidnapping of residents. The community, resilient in the face of adversity, rallied together to overcome this unimaginable event.
